#2 Maintenance: May 25th, 2017

Hey all,

Ive noticed a lot of concern about maintenances and the impact it has on your game time. We probably should have just given you a schedule of activity for the month of May and explained what was going on. Going forward, toward the beginning of each month, Eric will provide a schedule of that months maintenance.

So, whats been going on this past month? Essentially, we have been migrating from one Datacenter to another and upgrading the Game Server hardware and supporting software. You won't directly notice improvements in performance, but these changes dramatically help us maintain the game and improve its overall reliability. As you can imagine, its an enormous undertaking to move absolutely everything all servers and related hardware, supporting hardware, network infrastructure, upgrading the operating systems, management systems and tools, and more.

For the most part, weve been able to do it without a ton of downtime, but theres been a couple times this month where the migration didnt go as planned. As a result, we had to extend the maintenance window. Not fun for you nor for us!

Typically, we have a maintenance every two weeks and usually on a Tuesday. Theres a lot of coordination required between teams, as its not just turning servers off/on, but making sure all services spin up properly, databases are in good shape, all server hardware is checked, supporting software is updated, and more. No excuses, just means to keep the game healthy we need to validate everything and much of the work requires players to be offline.

Whats happening on Thursday should be the last of the migration components, but some of these impact our game services. So, this requires us to ensure no in-game activity is happening, and shutdown the Live Game. Our sincerest apologies to everyone as we did not realize it was a holiday (our bad for not looking at the calendar). We still need to have the maintenance, but Ive asked the team to start an hour earlier and if at all possible shorten the window. We will get SWTOR back online as fast as possible.

The next scheduled downtime is June 13th and that maintenance is for Game Update 5.2.2. Its possible we may need to restart everything on June 6th to flesh out any potential issues, but well let you know.

Thanks for understanding and again, well continue to improve our communications with you.

Hey everyone!

We will be taking the servers offline on Thursday, May 25th in order to perform back end updates. As there are no client-side changes, there wont be a version number or download associated with this maintenance. SWTOR.com will also be down during this time.

Details:
DATE: 25 May 2017
TIME: 5:00AM - 8:00AM PDT (1200 - 1500 GMT)

Thank you for your patience as we maintain Star Wars: The Old Republic!

I will send this over to the team and see if we can figure out what the issue is here.

I'm against increased speed limits, because of safety concerns.... And we still haven't got the traffic lights installed at major intersections. When are we gonna get the traffic citation droids we were promised to help maintain safety?

Also, some of the maps aren't even big enough to justify faster speed limits... But that's another discussion....
So, what I read from your comments is we need to offer a new Character Perk - "Vehicle Collision Prevention". I'll look into it. <grin>

Command Rank 5 happening, not just a bad, sick tisted joke from Bioware

I may be opening a can of worms () by replying, but I wanted to address the question about Tier 5. Essentially, what you are seeing is just old data that needs to be purged.

We have no plans to add Tier 5 levels/crates to Galactic Command anytime soon. I'll be sure to kick off a thread after I release the Roadmap to dive deeper into our gearing vision for the coming year. That way, we're all on the same footing and can have a good discussion about what and when.

Regardless the Harbinger server issue isn't linked to the road map at all and should be looked at straight away
On this point you are correct - The Harbinger issues are not linked directly to the Roadmap, but as you know, we've had to address a number of issues with that server over the past couple months. We even had to extend the downtime this past month to resolve database concerns of which we communicated fairly regularly during the outage.

I won't give you platitudes about the issues you've raised, but I also do not want to enter into contentious discussions about upcoming changes, when I haven't told you what we're doing, yet. I fully understand your frustration and hope you'll hang with me long enough to realize how much I do care about our players, our game, and everyone's opinions.

The team will deliver some amazing changes this year and it won't all be bling.

Respectfully, Keith

Post Windows 10 Update problem

Hey folks,

A few updates on this situation. For players that have updated Windows 10 to the Creator Edition, they can experience an issue in SWTOR that causes a crash to desktop. This seems to be primarily caused by being alt-tabbed out of the game and focusing on another window while SWTOR is open and loading.

The team is looking into fixing the problem and I will pass on updates as I have them. In the meantime there are three workarounds which have had some success.
1) Disable vsync on your video card.
2) Disable Game Mode in Windows.
3) In Windows, disable the full-screen optimization option for SWTOR.

I will pass on more information as I have it.

Question for Story Devs: How to justify Sith Pureblood Inquisitor?

I think the first backstory you have there is more likely than the second, personally - as brutal as the Sith are to one another, there must be cases where a powerful Pureblood Sith is overthrown and their surviving family members enslaved. It would certainly be quite the trophy for the Sith who overthrew them; if Purebloods are held to be the most powerful, then defeating and enslaving them must be seen as an impressive display of power indeed.

Perhaps the victorious Sith had intended to keep his Pureblood victim's family in slavery permanently, but was overruled and forced to send the Force-sensitive ones to the academy as is tradition? Now he/she is constantly trying to find ways to undermine or kill the Pureblood covertly, before they can become powerful enough to exact revenge. Could be some fun RP opportunities beyond what the storyline brings
